UdeM now ranks 114th amongst the world's top universities, up 23 places

The 2012 edition of QS World University Rankings published today reveals that Université de Montréal, with its affiliated HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal schools, has improved its standing by 23 places to rank 114th worldwide. UdeM also participated in the QS Stars global university ratings system for the first time and obtained a perfect 5-star score. The QS evaluations, with their high-quality methodology, are among the world's most widely respected university ranking systems.

“Year after year, major international ranking systems like QS World University Rankings confirm the place of the Université de Montréal among the great universities on the planet,” said Rector Guy Breton. “UdeM ranks in the top percentile for universities worldwide, and is one of the rare French-language institutions to achieve this. The first to benefit from the very high quality of our university are, of course, our students.”

Among the factors in UdeM's outstanding performance are its improved standings in a wealth of disciplines: modern languages, history, mathematics, environmental studies, life sciences, psychology, computer science, statistics and operational research, political science and international studies, law, economy and econometrics. A special scoring for mathematics this year saw a huge leap of 73 points, now placing the university 55th worldwide.

In addition to its fine performance in the general rankings, UdeM obtained a perfect mark of 5 stars in the QS Stars evaluation, which rates universities according to 30 criteria, including research quality, teaching quality, graduate employability, infrastructure, internationalization and innovation.

“I'd like to express my sincere thanks to the members of our community who have made our university a renowned seat of higher learning among a worldwide elite,” Breton said. “Our teachers and researchers, as well as our entire staff, all contribute daily toward making UdeM a truly great university we can all be proud of.”
