In a unanimous vote this evening, the board of governors of the Université de Montréal has renewed the term of office of Rector Guy Breton, whose present term expires on May 31, 2015. Dr. Breton will now be able to carry on his work at UdeM to the end of his second term on May 31, 2020.
Dr. Breton's second term was renewed by the board on the recommendation pursuant to consultations of the advisory committee on renewal of the rectorship, in accordance with the university statutes.
“Rector Guy Breton has been behind major progress at the Université de Montréal since assuming office in June 2010,” said Chancellor Louise Roy. “His talents as a leader and communicator, his pragmatism and enthusiasm have earned our admiration. Under his leadership, the Université de Montréal has gained renewed energy, further reinforcing our position as a great university, in research and education alike, here in Quebec and in the entire French-speaking world. At the local level, Dr. Breton has also forged links with all sectors of the community and reaffirmed our university's important social role.”
The rectorship advisory committee consisted of five members, including Chancellor Louise Roy as chair. Two members of the committee were appointed by the University Assembly: one student instructor from the department of physics and one full professor from the department of French language and literature, both members of the faculty of arts and sciences. Two more members came from the board of governors: one independent board member and one professor from the faculty of music.
Some 50 submissions were made to the advisory committee. These submissions came from all sectors of the community and were presented in person at hearings or submitted in writing. The vast majority were enthusiastic in their support of Dr. Breton and asked that his term of office be renewed.
“Dr. Breton has the enthusiastic support of the board in carrying out his mandate,” said Chancellor Roy. “He has a clear and precise vision of the future for the Université de Montréal and the ability to mobilize the community in order to complete the numerous projects already underway. I'm very happy with the way everything has gone in the past three years and I'm sure we can look forward to more major successes in the future.”
The Université de Montréal is ranked as one of the finest universities worldwide. In two years, UdeM improved its ranking by 45 positions to 92nd on the prestigious QS World University Rankings. In addition, UdeM has recently been named one of the 30 top employers in the Greater Montreal Metropolitan Region.
Dr. Guy Breton is the 11th rector of the Université de Montréal and a full professor in the faculty of medicine, where he has taught as a medical radiologist since 1979. During his years at UdeM, he has held a number of positions, including department chair and executive vice dean of the medical faculty. Dr. Breton has played a key role in the Université de Montréal Hospital Centre project (CHUM), serving as vice-president of the Société d'implantation du CHUM and director of planning for CHUM 2010. In 2009, the Quebec Association of Radiologists, an organization he served as secretary and president for 17 years, presented the Albert Jutras Award to Dr. Breton, in recognition of his outstanding career in the university and hospital fields.
