The Executive Committee of the Université de Montréal, at its last session, appointed Robert Tessier to the position of Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer at the Université de Montréal (IRIC), with a three-year mandate. A seasoned administrator, Mr. Tessier is also Chairman of the Board of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.
“Robert Tessier's commitment to the cause of teaching and scientific research is remarkable,” stated Université de Montréal chancellor Louise Roy. “The Université de Montréal and its Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer are privileged to be able to rely on partners who believe, as he does, in the transformative power of knowledge.”
The rector of the Université de Montréal, Guy Breton, also expressed his gratitude: “I warmly thank Robert Tessier for agreeing to share his time and his enormous experience for the benefit of our community. I also thank the outgoing chairman of the IRIC board, Marc-André Blanchard, who contributed substantially to the development of this state-of-the-art institute, which is a source of pride for our university.”
“We're especially proud that we can count on the expertise of an administrator of Robert Tessier's caliber,” emphasized ITIC chief executive officer Michel Bouvier. “He shares our strategic vision and our values of excellence and of surpassing oneself. After more than ten years of activity, the groundbreaking IRIC model is bearing fruit, and we're sure to continue along the right path with the support and guidance of our board of directors.”
Mr. Tessier holds a degree in sociology from the Université de Montréal. The Alumni Association presented him, on May 8, 2012, with the Order of Merit, the highest honor awarded by the Association, in recognition of his major contribution to numerous organizations in the areas of education, culture, community action and business.
Before being appointed Chairman of the Board of the Caisse, he worked with Gaz Métro, first as President and Chief Executive Officer as well as Chairman of the Board. His past positions have included President and Chief Executive Officer of Marine Industries Limited and Alstom Canada. In the public sector, Mr. Tessier spent several years as a senior civil servant with the Gouvernement du Québec in such roles as Secretary of the Conseil du trésor, Québec's Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Executive Vice President of the Société générale de financement du Québec.
