Université de Montréal rector Daniel Jutras today officially opened UdeM’s new campus in Brossard. Among the guests in attendance were Quebec's minister of higher education, Pascale Déry, and Brossard mayor Doreen Assaad.
Located in Solar Uniquartier with direct access to the REM, which will link UdeM’s mountain campus to Montreal’s South Shore by light rail, the 3,500-square-metre Brossard campus has 12 classrooms and laboratories and a 125-seat auditorium.
“We designed the Brossard campus to bring the university closer to South Shore residents,” Jutras said. “This is the essence of local university outreach: making the university accessible to all people of all ages. This campus aims to meet educational needs in the Montérégie region, which is growing fast demographically and economically.”
The Brossard campus is innovative, creative and dynamic. Since the fall of 2022, it has been offering a variety of study programs in modern facilities equipped with the latest technology. It replaces the campus UdeM had occupied in Longueuil since 1999.
"Brossard is experiencing unprecedented development and the arrival of Université de Montréal in our city is in perfect harmony with this effervescence," said Assaad. "By facilitating access, through its proximity, to high-level university education, I'm convinced this campus will be a big success with everyone in the Montérégie. It's a great source of pride for all us."
The new premises occupy two floors of the building at 2000 de l’Éclipse St. The multi-purpose facilities accommodate in-person, multimodal and hybrid teaching. The campus also boasts virtual reality, self-production and video recording labs, as well as rooms for active and collaborative learning equipped with information technology to support teaching strategies.
"When we talk about making accessibility to higher education a priority, this is one of the projects we have in mind," said Déry. "I would like to highlight Université de Montréal's initiative, which will provide the people of the Montérégie with diversified learning opportunities, geared towards the world of work, in modern and attractive facilities."
Wide range of programs of study
The current course catalogue consists mainly of short professional development programs. The campus offers undergraduate programs in fields as diverse as criminology, victimology, gerontology, addiction intervention, law, psychology, economics and applied computer science, as well as courses in languages, food safety technology and music theory.
At the graduate level, there are microprograms in nursing practice development, nursing leadership and management, infection prevention and control, and palliative and end-of-life care.
A wide variety of cultural activities are also available, such as parent-child choirs, music appreciation and introduction to musical instruments workshops, the Belles Heures lecture series, and Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration francization courses.
The program offerings will be expanded in the coming semesters, as the campus is designed to accommodate 2,000 students. When the first section of the REM begins operating in the spring of 2023, it will provide fast and easy access to the campus for faculty and students. Applications for admission for the next semester are now open.
