A major national gathering bringing together some of the country's leading scientific minds is coming to Université de Montreal next week.

From Nov. 12 to 16, the university and its affiliated business school HEC Montréal and engineering school Polytechnique Montréal will host the Royal Society of Canada's annual conference.

Billed as a "Celebration of Excellence and Engagement," the 2025 edition will open on Wednesday with a day-long symposium on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in science, titled "AI's Conquest of Science: Implications for the Scientific Community." Hugo Larochelle, scientific director of Mila and a professor in UdeM's Department of Computer Science and Operations Research, will deliver the keynote address.

The symposium comes at a time when, driven by recent advances in generative AI, the discipline is moving beyond specialist circles to become fully integrated into scientific research. Much as they did with the widespread adoption of the Internet 30 years ago, researchers across all disciplines are now grappling with how to incorporate AI tools into their work.

Several UdeM experts will take part in discussions throughout the conference's opening day. They include professors Catherine Régis and Pierre Larouche from the Faculty of Law; Luc Vinet, CEO of IVADO and a professor in the Department of Physics; and Golnoosh Farnadi, an adjunct professor in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research.

By hosting this national event, UdeM, HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal aim to reaffirm their central role in advancing knowledge and research across Canada.
