Université de Montréal and its affiliated schools, HEC Montréal (business) and Polytechnique Montréal (engineering), are strengthening their position among Canada's leading research-intensive universities.
In the 'Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities' 2025 ranking produced by Research Infosource, UdeM with its two schools place second nationwide across all sectors, underscoring the vitality of their scientific output.
For the 2023–2024 fiscal year, research income at UdeM reached $775.4 million, giving it a number-two position in the category of research universities that have a medical faculty. This represents a 9.3 per cent increase over 2022-2023.
Research partnerships are also on the rise. Revenue from industry partners totalled $104.1 million, the second highest in Canada, These partnerships account for 13.4 per cent of the UdeM’s total research income and have grown by 18 per cent in a single year.
The university also distinguishes itself in artificial intelligence.
Between 2019 and 2023, the university ranked second in Canada for AI publications arising from cross-sector collaborations, with 378 articles, or 35 per cent of UdeM's total AI output. (UdeM also ranks fifth for international collaborations in AI, with 664 articles.)
“Reaching second place among the country’s research universities is first and foremost a recognition of the remarkable work of our teams, our students and our partners,” said Vincent Poitout, UdeM's vice-rector of research and innovation.
“This ranking speaks to the strength of our ecosystem, where interdisciplinary collaboration and an openness to the world allow research to move forward in the service of the common good.”
