Michel Bouvier, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine and principal investigator at the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. A renowned researcher and pioneer in his field, he has bridged the gap between basic research, translational science and the biopharmaceutical industry through major methodological innovations in cell signaling, and in particular has revolutionized the study of G-protein-coupled receptors. A prolific author and internationally renowned mentor, he has trained hundreds of scientists and contributed to patented technologies that have spurred therapeutic innovation.
A leading figure in Canadian healthcare, microbiologist and infectious-disease specialist Caroline Quach-Thanh has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. A professor in the Faculty of Medicine, a clinician at the Santé Québec – CHU Sainte-Justine and currently Quebec's National Director of Public Health, she has conducted research that has strengthened infection prevention and control in hospitals and the community. An outstanding communicator, she has also used her expertise to educate the public, particularly on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jean-François Rivest, a professor emeritus in the Faculty of Music, is among the new members of the Order of Canada. A leading figure in Quebec’s music scene, the virtuoso violinist and conductor founded the UdeM Orchestra and the École LUMI, two educational initiatives aimed at nurturing the next generation of musicians. He has also performed around the world in hundreds of concerts, notably with some of Canada’s most prestigious ensembles, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.
Alumnus
A 1966 graduate of the Faculty of Law, Juanita Westmoreland-Traoré has been inducted into the Order of Canada. She made history in the legal community by becoming Quebec’s first Black judge and the first Black dean of a law school in Canada. She was also the first Black woman to teach law at two major universities in Quebec. Her unwavering commitment to equality and justice continues to inspire students and young professionals.
