According to the Shanghai rankings, Université de Montréal and its affiliated schools are among the world's top 100 academic institutions thanks to their performance in 10 subject areas.
On November 10, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy unveiled its subject rankings for 2024. Encompassing 55 disciplines in the natural and social sciences, these listings highlight the various strengths of post-secondary institutions worldwide.
This year, the evaluation underwent a major methodological change with the addition of four indicators (increasing the total to nine), under the existing five key pillars: world-class faculty, world-class output, high-quality research, research impact, and international collaboration.
The new indicators include the recognition of highly cited researchers and the participation of faculty members in editorial committees of international academic journals or on boards of international academic organizations.
In the new rating environment, UdeM and its affiliated schools maintained their ranking among the world's Top 100 universities in 10 subject areas. They shone particularly brightly in computer science, where they ranked 24th in the world, as well as in library and information science (LIS), where they jumped an impressive 17 places to 35th position. Based on those results, UdeM and its affiliated schools are the second-ranked post-secondary institution in Canada for these subjects, just behind the University of Toronto in computer science and McGill University in LIS.
UdeM and its affiliated schools also stood out for their significant progress in areas such as public health (+48 places), business administration (+24) and transportation sciences and technology (+6). Additional bright spots of progress include law, mathematics, physics, biotechnology and chemistry.
UdeM and its affiliated schools continue to build on their position as key teaching and research institutions in Canada and abroad.
