Yoshua Bengio appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire

Yoshua Bengio, a professor in Université de Montréal’s Department of Computer Science and Operations Research (DIRO), has been appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

The royal honour recognizes Bengio “for services to Artificial Intelligence in the UK.” A Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), he also serves as the UK’s Special Artificial Intelligence Advisor.

Within the Order of the British Empire, the OBE is one of the ranks used to recognize a significant contribution to a given activity as well as public service. 

A pioneer of deep learning, Bengio is co-president and scientific director of LawZero, an AI research non-profit organization. He is also the founder and scientific advisor of Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.

Bengio also serves as special advisor and founding scientific director of IVADO, and is a senior fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), where he co-directs the 'Learning in Machines & Brains' program.
